Loosely Decoupled

On the site

Analytics
Google Analytics counts visits: which pages, from where, on what kind of device, how far down you scroll, which outbound links you follow, and what you search for on the search page. A page’s address is recorded in full, so a tool’s numbers reach Google when they are in the link. It never sees what you type into a form. It is what says whether an article is read. If your browser sends Do Not Track, Google’s script is still fetched but never started, so nothing is counted; the fetch itself is all Google sees.
No ads
No ad network or pixel. Nothing on the page is sold.
Cookies
Google Analytics sets its own cookies to tell a returning visit from a new one. Your theme choice is stored in your own browser and never leaves it.
Server logs
The host records requests (address, page, time) as any web server does. They are read to keep the site up and for nothing else.
Affiliate links
This site is an Amazon Associate and earns from qualifying purchases. Follow an affiliate link and the merchant learns you came from here, and Google Analytics records which product it was and the page you followed it from. Every such link is marked beside the link.

If you subscribe by email

The newsletter runs on Kit, which stores the address you give it and records opens and clicks as every email platform does. The form also records which page you subscribed from, and on a topic page the topic, so that a reader who signed up from PowerShell is not sent the Swift article. Nothing else is asked for, the list is not shared or sold, and every issue carries an unsubscribe link that removes the address rather than suppressing it.

Changes

If any of this changes, this page changes first and says what.

New articles, by email.

A short note when something new is published.
